Andy:

The higher the coil is placed within the vertical, the more inductance is
required to resonate the antenna. Your total inductance for bottom loading
seems more then you need. (Depending on capacitance of the antenna to
ground. I have not heard of a varometer coil having the same inductance as
the main coil. Usually it is much less and has enough inductance to just
"tune" to resonance with the main coil being within the "ballpark". If you
have half the inductance in the varometer coil, you certainly don't have the
best Q. Bill Bower's just wound a base loading coil for me. The total
inductance is a little under 3 mH. (he was quessing how much coil I needed
for my wire vertical). The varometer coil looks many times smaller then the
main coil (maybe 1/10th or smaller then the main coil).

I know in my ham mobile days, I needed a much larger coil when I mounted
the loading coil on top of a 4 foot bottom section compaired to when I base
loaded the total of an 8 foot whip.

was 30 feet AGL, and the new on is 40 feet AGL. Now for the questions;
with the elevated coil ( 2.32 mH ) , and the inside coil ( 2.44 mH ),
they add up to 4.76 mH ...

Does this value sound unreasonably high ??

Is it possible that I might be tuning a harmonic ??
and how would I know if I were ??

Thanks so much for any input as I learn the characteristics of the
new lowFER antenna... Never tried this type of design before.
