There are four versions of the LM386, -1 -2 -3 -4 . The dash 4 is rated 
at 18volts -1 is 6v -2 is 9? -3 is 12v. 
Most of those on the market surplus are -1. Some of the ne602/386 
direct conversion designs got a bad reputation running the 386 at 6 
volts where the power is limited and clipping easily occurs with the 
-1. I prefer to run a -4 at 12 volts. 

Better choice is the chip Lawrence used in his exciter. I think it is a 
tda7052. It will put out the 1 watt at 185khz. Class A, B or AB is 
easily achived with common transistors. good example is Asshar Farhans 
JBOT amp( just a bunch of transistors). Google jbot and you should find 
it . With proper torroids should be able to work 1 to 5 watts at 185khz.
