[Lowfer] Overnight reception in NE IL

They are actually pirate beacons. Nobody seems to mind though. There's
some info here:

There is also a discussion group about them at hfunderground.com. As
for the "who," I doubt you are going to find that out. The "where" is
somewhere in the southwest desert of the USA. BTW most of these are
only milliwatts with a couple being at the 1 watt level.

Last night I heard a very strange signal in the 600 meter region. It
seemed to have two peaks, one around 495 kHz and one around 509 kHz.
It sounded like a digital burst with changing frequency, followed by a
down chirp repeating about every 2.5 seconds. It went from 0021 to
0023Z 17 Feb, then disappeared. It reappeared at about 0026Z and was
still going when I had to leave at 0035Z. I thought there might be
something local generating it but not sure.
