Andy - the fold back is probably temperature related - I can run mine for a few mins at X (making sure its seeing a reasonable load - then it drops immediately by NdB (mine is about 6 but it does vary a bit with temp) - this seems to be in the specs for the device at 1W input at around 200Khz  - additional cooling, and by that I mean direct sinking may help but we are pushing it. At 1W input it appears only warm, but gets hot if offtune of course.

Ive another linear amp "5W" device here which runs only warm at 2.5W output 137 and 185 but gets hot very quickly at 500Khz on dummy load test (its spec'd only to 300kHz)

Nothing from you - save a timed weak carrier so Im sure it was you - given a noise free environment it would probably worked but the S meter on fast agc reads 20 over 9 on the R75 to give you some idea on the level of muck. In Alaska on the same antennae its S2 to 3.
