I run my variometer in the middle of the loading coil and it is wired in 
the middle of the coil. So picture a bit of loading coil, then the 
variometer is wired in series, then the rest of the loading coil. Put it 
back the way you had it. It worked, it doesn't work now according to 
your post.

Sometimes things are best left alone. If you want to experiment, build a 
second coil/variometer and leave the original alone. Lesson learned the 
hard way huh? Now bend over and tell the wife to give you a swift kick 
in the ass...hi hi...OK, all is well once again.
