Interesting Ralph...well, yes, must be moisture free and kept that way with a sealant, say common wood sealer, then maybe a laytex top coat. Sounds like more work unless that is part of the plan to begin with.
Let's keep in thought that Ralph originates from the (likely) most damp environs of the New Orleans area. So wood-anything is off the table, period. (I think N-O is below sea level ;-)
For more airid locales the possibility exists--and a wooden ormer is quick to make up, maybe first as a "let's see if this works," to get going.

Unless the wood is very dry and kept that way, it will be more lossy
than PVC pipe or a polyethylene bucket. This is based on my 166.5 KHZ
transmitter experience.
