Here's a thought on minor variometer coils to approach a air-core former. Wood and sticks!

Shouldn't need many turns for a variometer so take some 1/4" plywood and place (glue) an odd number of wood pegs around its circumference, say 9-11. The coil is wound in basket-weave style. Likely the hardest part is mounting i within the main coil, if that's a concern. This could be a top mounted for mechnical ease. Of course some sealer should first be applied.
