I have no experience with an active antenna, But as Charlie
mentioned, the PA0RDT active miniwhip ( homebrewed ) seems
to be a very popular one. There's plenty of info on the net
about it, as well as some " modified " versions. 

The noise you mentioned while listening on LF; unless it's
electrical, TV, computer, etc. If it's just static crashes;
with a non-resonant wire, using a SSB width reception; the
static crashes will range from S-9 to as much as 20 to 30 dB 
over S-9. At my location, whether using my 160 meter windom,
or my lowFER transmit vertical; that's pretty much the norm.
Here's where the Computer, and software come into play to
dig those signals that are " Not Hearable " by ear, out of
all that noise.
