All the responses thus far have been good. But there is one important point: through-hole parts are fast going away. Many disappeared during the RoHS implementation (which among many other things, reduced the amount of lead). The trend seems to have picked up recently, and I'll bet that many of Mouser and Digi-Key items will not be restocked.

Here at work, we will be considerably reducing our storage of through-hole parts this year, and most of the survivors will be for repairs or R&D, as we use mostly SMT parts in current products. My home junkbox is expected to benefit, though the extent is presently unknown!

But for those of us who still build things with perfboard or simple PC boards, it definitely would make sense to start building our parts stocks. It's tougher to use SMT parts for breadboarding, but not impossible. Dead-bugging over PC board with very thin copper can actually work quite well for resistors, capacitors and the like. It's the darn IC's that are tough.
