I looked at the lightning map and decided to turn off the rec last night .
Should have left it on. Haven't checked 500khz
whats going on there?
Bill has told me in the past that summertime propagation is not uncommon.
Lightning map last night showed a line from
below Houston up the plains states, and more up the east coast. So you did
 well to copy.

I back up the June 17 reception report of WEB by Paul, K5WMS. Despite a
large band of lightning activity between us, at 0830Z 6/20/09 I tuned
for WEB and found it via ARGO QRSS-30, slow on 189.949.5 kHz. Signals
were in and out of my noise floor until 1030Z (local sunrise was 1017Z).
Great to copy this impressive beacon again at over 900 miles in the
 summer.
