Only a guess on the subject, but in my experience in
working on old broadcast transmitters; ( 50's and 60's
era ) The rectifiers in some of the beasts were
Mercury Vapor tubes. I was told by the engineers of
experience, and learned by it myself; DO NOT LAY THEM
ON THEIR SIDE. Of course they had visible amounts of
mercury inside them. If one fell over, you needed to
stand it up and let it sit overnight to allow the
mercury to settle into the bottom of the tube. ( to be
safe ), if you didn't; hit it with 220-ac and watch
the fireworks, and possible explosion of the tube (
EPA nightmare there !! ) In the cfl's I bought, the
circuit boards were in the plastic base and were
vented which would expose them to moisture - NOT GOOD,
and if they are enclosed; could the power supply just
be getting too hot and dying ?? Could it be remotely
possible that the mercury vapor could settle in the
glass tube during non-use and possibly short the
starting circuit ?? Instant KUH-POWIE when energized !
Don't know for sure, just some possibilities.
73, everybody - Andy - KU4XR
