Check the connection between the BNC connector and the cable shield.
If its open you're effectively plugging a 'bit of wire' into the
counter input.

Subject: [Lowfer] Problem w/ Freq Cntr
All, esp. techs,
I'm stuck with a problem. I recently got a used Fluke counter from an
known equipment provider.
Want to use it to help in building x-tal divider circuits, down to LF.
What it does: Lights up when turned on. The self test according to the
manual is okay. But when the
BNC cable is plugged in the counter goes wild--only when cable
connected. Does that when cable
leads are open or, say, connected to a low value resistor.
Oh, once or twice it locked-on to a simple FET osc. circuit of a known
crystal.
Ideas??
Peter
