[Lowfer] Orion

Thanks for the input. I ordered some components from eBay for an 8 foot
loop. I got the MVAM109s am waiting for the wire and other solid state
components. That may be enough to drive the Orion & if not, I will add some
more gain or add regeneration to the loop.
Do you know how the AMRAD Active antenna stacks up against the MFJ active
antenna? I can't seem to find the XCP666 JFET the AMRAD calls for. I'd
really like a wide band ant for casual listening on the BC band. I a
Palomar loop but I'd like to get something Up & Away from the shack. I live
in a rural setting, county population 5000, so It' should be easy to
position an antenna away from the noise.
I used to build all the time. I started in 1955 when I got licensed as
KN2RBV and didn't have any commercial equipment until around 1972.
Before getting my first license in 55, my friend & I build sark gap
transmiters from spark coils and door bells and used the low end of the AM
band to practice code.
As a kid back in 54 I had unlimited access to a military surplus electronics
store in Union City , NJ. Every day was Christmas as I could have whatever
I wanted if I worked for it, repairing equipment. I can still remember
dragging an X-Band signal generator and a magnetron home in my Red Wagon.
Saturday nights were spent in TV repair shops, where I would work on the
backlogs & get paid for whatever I could repair. No risk, nice conversation
& good pocket change. (No leather jacket, chopped down 49 Mercury, or Duck
Ass hair cut. I was a real Nerd and I regret it every time IBM sends me my
retirement check :) ).
Back in 72 I lost most of my left hand & my eyesight started getting worse
so the construction slowed down. By 1988 it became difficult to build as the
components started shrinking & generally drying up so the construction
projects migrated to antennas etc, so I stopped building stuff that used
micro miniature components.
At present, I don't have my usual collection components so my projects will
be slow and limited to what I can scrounge from eBay.

Pete
I am using my TenTec Pegasus for lowfer reception. Alone it is deaf below
500 khz ,but with a preamp it functions well. My preamp is from Lyle
Kohler's
home page. Just google his name and it should take you there.
Problem with TENTEC equipment is they are designed with a bandpass front
end.
The lowest set of input filters are designed for 160 and 80 meters. All you
have to do is overcome the attenuation being out of the filter bandpass.
Also
the preamp has a field effect transistor to change the high impedance of
a random wire down to 50 ohms.
If you are not into building LW Engineering offers a similar unit.
Dont give up on the Orion

I called Ten Tec. They tell me that the Orion is not designed for LF and
although it tunes, they have no specs and don't think it will work well. So
much for published specs.
I'll go the up converter route.

You can always call Ten-Tec their support is great.
Maybe they have some specs or software mod.
I know they make stuff for the military.
