Peter,
The need for high Q in a loading coil for receiving is not as great, as
there is usually an excess of signal+noise, and you can easily stay well
above the receiver's noise level. And as Pete points out, the current is
very small and not an issue. On the other hand, you might have a problem
with swings in outside temperature, as the inductance will vary with the
temperature-dependend Al of the ferrite core. If memory serves, type 61
material shows better temperature characteristics than the denser stuff.
The reigning expert on ferrite loading coils is Bill Bowers. He did any
number of articles on ferrites for The Lowdown. He doesn't watch the
mail lists, but definitely responds to email. His email address is under
