Hi,
My QTH is Seattle, WA and I have a low frequency receiver (surplus) and
can tune 17.2 Khz I have an Inverted-L cut for 160M. Any chance of
hearing this signal at my QTH?
SAQ would be an extremely challenging one to hear on the West Coast in
Seattle, WA. The SAQ signal is weak enough here on the East Coast but it has been
heard in Ohio. To have any chance of hearing SAQ your local conditions would
need to be 'dead quiet' on VLF which means not a trace of any line noise at
your location and virtually zero static in the band.
Anyone trying for SAQ should try to be familiar with band conditions on VLF.
Almost anyone can hear the strong U.S. Navy stations like North Dakota on
25.2KHz, Jim Creek, WA on 24.8KHz and Cutler, ME on 24.0KHz. These are stations
running super power like 2 megawatts and located right here in the U.S.
SAQ runs 200KW and is located in Sweden. If you are to have any chance of
hearing SAQ you should be able to copy a comparable European VLF signal like
Italy on 20.27KHz and have enough selectivity to separate stations 200-300Hz
apart.
