In the early 80's, I was told about a LowFER club in SoCal that had been
around since the 60's.

Long Wave Club of America [LWCA] started by John Clement; used to meet in his breakfast room. Still exists in a different venue - [http://lwca.org/]. John and Mac Macintosh started publishing "THE LOWDOWN" at that time and it's still around.
In the 1980's the LA area was very active on the 1750 meter band with as many as 10 beacons at one time. For several years there was an active 180 kHz SSB net of about 6 members which met regularly on Saturday mornings and at other times. Used tube transceivers designed and built by Charles Faulkner, W6FPV. As I recall the output stage was a 6AQ5 and power was rather modest but well over Part 15 rules.
