Ted,

OK, the wire size is fine, and the tuning capacitance sounds about 
right. A transformer step-up ratio of 1:7 (or 2:14 or 3:21) would be 
close for 50 ohms, if the antenna had a resistance of about 1 ohm.

Since you are seeing 2A into the matching network for a guessed power 
output of 170 watts, that would imply 43 ohms instead of the desired 50, 
so that isn't bad. What turns ratio are you actually using?

I'm thinking that you should cook up a way to measure the actual antenna 
current, as that would answer a lot of questions.

One other thought...you are almost due west from me. If your antenna is 
broadside to E-W as you mentioned, then I won't get much of a signal, as 
  you are firing north and south. Mitch should be better positioned for 
reception.
