Hi Don,

      The previous owners of our house had installed a buried wire around the perimeter (400' or so on a side) as an invisible dog fence - I don't have a dog so I tried it as an antenna and as John predicts it is a poor antenna.

     In addition to the tuned loop and active antenna that John recommended I would suggest that you take a look at the K9AY loop:

    I use a two turn version which is better at LF.
