Jay,

This is a subject that I know a lot about, having advanced degrees in applied mathematics, fluid dynamics, and meteorology. I also worked on the Viking (mars spacecraft) meteorology data. I worked for Jim Hansen at NASA GISS in the late 70s and early 80s and I understand his mathematical models describing radiative transfer and the climate models that they are coupled to. The radiative transfer models (which accounts for the absorption of infra-red radiation due to atmospheric constituents such as Carbon Dioxide) are painstakingly detailed and have been tested and verified under many different conditions. Every absortion line in the spectra is modeled. And it is Jim Hansen's work that forms the basis for much of our understanding of the relation between greenhouse gases and climate.

A small global annual average temperature increase hides a lot of detail in the averaging. The polar regions will show a much much greater increase in temperature for example than the average global temperature.

Mars is a very different planet than earth. Mars' orbital eccentricity is much greater than earth's and the Milankovitch effect (perturbation of mars' orbit by the gravity of the outer planets, especially Jupiter) is much greater. Both earth and mars have climate fluctuations due to orbital perturbations. The earth is warming even after you subtract out any Milankovitch effects.

What I object to is lots of good hard science being dismissed by non-scientists and scientists with marginal credentials in the relevant field. You can't ignore the science because you don't like Al Gore. The "blame America First" thing is just Fox news twisting reality to fit their party line and has no relevance to anything. India and China are will rapidly out the U.S. in producing greenhouse gases yet I don't hear Fox dismissing global warming as "blame China first"!
