OK, now you need to find the up/down control.  Sounds more and more like it
is off screen.  It is possible, if the front controls don't change anything
you may need to find in internal deviation control potentiometer to bring it
back within the front panel control range, someone might have tweaked it.
You need to dig up a manual.  One thing you can try is give it a signal,
connecting the audio output of a pocket radio is good, and turn up the
volume slowly and see if the trace appears, or at least a few peaks, this
can give you an idea of where the trace ran off to!
