For once, you Yankees didn't keep all the pretty lights for yourselves.
Well, OK, maybe that ought to be "for twice," but I was asleep Wednesday
evening.
Tonight, though was another matter! About 2400 UTC the northern sky was red
in west central Georgia, all the way from the north-northwest to the
northeast, rich enough to be easily distinguished from the sodium vapor glow
of Atlanta in the north-northeast. Even more conclusive was when the reds
were joined by vast blobs of greenish white that waxed and waned and slowly
shifted position, and also when the much of the north took on the bluish
white appearance of twilight for several minutes.
All in all, we had about 45 minutes of really good viewing here. At one
point, the red in the northeast extended nearly 25 degrees above the horizon
and stretched surprisingly far toward the east. It was something to watch
the Seven Sisters rising through auroral glow in the Deep South!
