Interesting, Paul. Can you describe the setup further:
1) The windings, is there more than one?
2) Have you tried one winding for the full length and then another at,
say, the center?
3) Is the winding single or multi-layered?
4) Is it tuned or untuned?
5) Does it feed a pre-amp?
I have some ferrite I got from Nebraska Surplus a while back.

Well awhile back I found them at a local fleamarket.
They are actually about 10" to 12" long each, and I have 3 in series,
glued
with some old ferrite glue I had from back in TV repair days.
The rods were about 3/4" in dia with a hole in the middle..
...
Litz windigs were added, and the whole thing is fitted into a PVC pipe
and
sealed with hot glue gun.
