Last winter I could hear the signal on my car radio (read: no bfo) and 
could hear a beat note from my beacon against the 1700 kc am station 
carriers up to about 8 miles.  Didn't try QRSS.

I have a small handheld with ssb and I can now hear it much farther than I 
can with the car radio.  Whenever winter sets in I'm curious to see how 
far I'll be able to hear it with that radio then.

Will try for the QRSS3 msg this weekend and let you know...
