Dale I/XDW was off for a while overnight looking for Lowfers, and the beacon
came back on full time at around 0330Z.

Dont know if my last message got thru (anti spam catches me quite a bit).

Alan G3NYK thinks these daytime enhancements (yep even nearly 3000kms ones)
are caused by high levels on X ray Ionoization in the D layer, to a point
where it can reflect off the bottom of this unpleasant layer and not
absorb. The reflection can be on or near the bottom at around say 50kms -
geometry says that this is still a hop or two but the path between you and
me is mostly water give or take a few 5000ft mountain ranges close in.

I get sudden daytime strong Xray enhanced signals from DCF39 at over 7000Kms
the same way here - the signal pops out of the noise during the "hot event"
and then rapid recombination happens and the signal fades. I reckon youll
even see these short term affects on lowfers. Direct correlation of the
event and signal enhancement is very good - Xray event detected - and up
comes the signal within a few mins...might be

I used to receive DCF39 at around 5000Kms in Ghana West Africa during the
daytime (D layer reflection) and Nightime (higher layer stuff) nearly every
day with fade outs between these two periods. Daytime was weaker of course
but more stable whereas the nightime was stronger which lots more mulitpath
fades/peaks. The morning D layer ramp up started at around 0830 local and
signals tended to fade by 1500, evening signals appeared just after local
dark at 1800.. this path was intensely ionosed of course given my equitorial
latitude...I didnt see the same from Costa Rica though the nightime signals
were similar - just a bit further.
