After thinking about the above I realized that all we have to do to send a 
cardioid patten is to drive the loop in the common mode as well as the 
differential mode. Since we feed our loops via a coupling transformer all we 
have to do is add a good ground below the loop, maybe via a ground screen, 
and connect and in-phase signal from another final through a loading coil to 
the loop. Inverting this signal reverses the pattern. I haven't calculated 
or measured the loss for my heavily treed situation, but will work on it.

Now I'm beginning to re-think the ground screen issue in the ARRL Antenna 
Book. Unintentional H-field pattern modification, via the E-field, would be 
more prominent at higher frequencies where the article in question is 
addressing.
