Mike, this is just a fitting that happened to have fallen in the bucket. The 
tech responsible for operating this rig claims that he has seen sparks 
between metal hoses when submerged with no fitting at the bottom. That's 
hard to believe because the hoses are grounded. This synthetic oil they are 
using is not a fuel of any kind so I think(?) there's no danger of 
explosion. BUT, what do they do with the new plastic gas tanks in 
automobiles these days (like mine) if moving fluid can cause a static charge 
to build?? Snowmobile gas tanks used to be made from the same polyethylene 
as the bucket and the old Tilitson carburetors used to use a continuous 
in/out feed through the tank to keep vapor lock to a minimum. The fuel lines 
were plastic but what if I had substituted copper in a pinch? Yikes!

In any case, I may try to build a static electricity generator using this 
principle.
