Only a yard? When I used to visit Bill's radio farm in Oklahoma we always
checked the signals with his monster ferrite rod antenna. It was 192" (16
feet) long and made up of a bundle of 6 1" diameter ferrite rods. You can
see a picture of it in Fine Tuning Proceedings, 1994-1995. The monster was
destroyed by an F5 tornado that came through Bill's place in 2000.

We put together many ferrite rod antennas, 27 different types and tested
them. These tests were published in the Lowdown, December 1998. If you
want to know how to set up a ferrite rod antenna you won't find a more
complete test anywhere.

Sorry to say Bill got tired of mowing the grass and taking care of that
radio farm acerage. Now he lives in Houston and, like me is noise
challenged. I'm glad to see he's got his beacon going again. He told me
the Q of the loading coil measures out to 1000. He must have a great signal
but I haven't caught it yet. Even with my fancy blanker the noise is
overpowering. By the time the blanker does its thing, there isn't much
signal left.
