OK -- I won't argue with the approach. Dex and I both use multi-turn tuned
loops which will provide more signal to the preamp. But you do reach a point
where you are limited by external noise.
Your nearest Loran site is Carolina Beach, which is pretty much east of you,
all the way across the state. But we're talking many kilowatts, here, so I'm
surprised that you don't see the lines.
I do wonder from time to time if all of Burhan's material represents state
of the art at this point. I have the greatest respect for his work, and
don't want to step into a hornet's nest, but I would certainly not build a
shielded untuned loop for this application, based on tests that I have done
over the years. It may work to your satisfaction, but it does represent a
compromise, in my opinion.
I guess without another antenna for comparison at your site, I can't really
answer your question. Maybe you ARE far enough inland that Loran doesn't
show.
