See more here, Steve, down to "BK,"
http://www.computerpro.com/~lyle/listen2/listn2.htm
Then backup on that site to the main page and check out those good
articles made possible by Lyle, LEK.

Frequence stability and accuracy is a must. Why? Because unlike the
NDBs you can hear on the DX-389 you likely cannot hear a LowFER signal
unless a neighbor to one due to the vry low power. That's why an rx w/
good frequence control is important. That plus signal processing
software for a Pentium pc are what allow one to observe, not hear, most
LowFER signals -- when the conditions are optimal, usually the winter
months. A popular software for this is ARGO and many of us use it for
detecting and recording LowFER contacts.
One receiver that some use and like is the R75. I and another use an
older Drake R8.
The other thing is a good antenna. For starting out I'd reco a
multi-turn loop, see Lyle's Web page for a good one. A pre-amp is
another good idea. Locating the loop away from house-driven electrical
noises is also a must, like away from the house.
There are many finer points to learn, Steve. These can be had from time
to time on this list by "reading the mail" and asking for an explanation
if needed.
