I also have an Icom 718 and yes it will work. It is not great but you can
listen around and try antennas and such. If you get over this burst of
silliness and move on to something else, then you didn't waste any $$ <G>.
If the bug bites deep and you can't kick the habit, I am sure you will want
to get something with better sensitivity for the cold, quiet winter
evenings. Here in southern California I can hear WWV at 60kHz and the Loran
(and side bands) at 100kHz +/- 10kHz just using my short, stubby 80M
inverted L antenna by bypassing the (external) antenna tuner.
If you are inside with normal human temperatures (60 to 80F?) the stability
should be good enough for QRSSS work. Do a 12hr Argo run on WWV (L or B,
never can remember which is the 60kHz station) and from a cold start you
should see it settle right in within the first hr or so and be essential a
straight line from the 1 to 2 hour point for the rest of the run. You
should start at the 3 or 10 second dot time for the first hr and then switch
to 60 or 120 second dot times. I could look around here for my captures,
but if memory serves me right, there was 10 or 12 Hz drift in that first
hour or so.
And you should have several stations you can see....one in OK, think there
is one in LA. And AL and MN maybe, depending on your antenna. I have not
succeeded in seeing any of the "back east" stations from our here, but then
I don't have a real LF antenna either.
Best of luck,
Gary WA6DTX
