Yeah, due to my antenna is so short...so I needed a lot of L.  Don't know 
how this one will perform compared to the little one I have in place now.

There are about 179' of #12 in the variometer and 782' of #12 in the coil.

It's so wide because I was going for twice as wide as long (tall).

But my question was this:

The design from AWG-COIL was for it to be about 33" in diameter and about 
16.5" long (tall :) ... and 92 turns and a pitch of 2.

But for some reason, when I'd wound 92 turns, the coil was only 11" long.  

(and now for the question)

Isn't it true that I need to stretch the turns out over the 16" called for 
in the design to reach the target inductance?  The wraps will be a little 
further apart, instead of close wound, but not very much.  If I don't do 
this, the L will be too high.  Right?
