[Lowfer] Counterpoise Ants

Okay Bill,
The main point I wanted answered was the one about the height of the CP
above ground and its effect on effective antenna height. You answered
that it is reduced, as I somewhat expected, but sometimes these thoughts
get asked as "thinking out loud" issues. Thanks. Of course it seems to
make good sense too. And also that about the number of CP radials.
That's likely why one doesn't see (say in QST) a broad CP less than
6-feet high. ;-} It would make unusable any land so covered.
And fine on Les' ground system. Yeah, recalling he was doing a new rear
deck and wanted to do the radial system before deck construction. The
ant. loading box was mounted off that deck. So that would lead me to
think it was a ground radial system. But yes, the prior CP was winter
only as it borrowed space above the outdoor pool, an IOU to the wife no
doubt.
Ok then just one more point since we've moved this far: Given a
reasonable backyard CP in a plane at say six feet tall, to be done
properly, the loading coil and input attachment for tx/rx should also be
at that plane, right? This would be supported by Lyle's previous comment
on not having a vert. loading coil inside a metal building and the
antenna above it (here the CP being analogous to metal roof).
Other: Last night produced no LF copy. This excluded LEK, BRO, RB,
usual captures in Dec-Jan. Oh darn.
Oh, did anyone notice the big LF coil shown being wound in the Dec. or
Jan QST? It was in the intro picture section as a "what are they doing"
item. His name was not familiar to me as a LowFER, but the coil form
looked like 4-foot dia. and a little longer, think it was on some
axis-type jig too.

At one time Les had a CP (counterpoise) installed over his swimming
pool.
Needless to say this was a 'winter-only' setup <G>. His latest antenna
was
mounted next to his house and he installed a CP, of sorts, under his
rear
deck. I think his pool CP was a big improvement over his original
buried,
simpler, ground system and the new location performed almost as well as
the
pool CP.
