call digsafe!

They come and locate all the underground utilities and mark them with 
orange spray paint and/or red flags.

Give them the area you want to know about and tell them you want to build 
houses, but that you aren't quite sure where to locate them yet.

They do big areas, and the service is free.

Just 2 weeks ago, we had a major telephone outage because someone dug 
without calling digsafe. I'm not sure how much it costs to repair a broken 
fiber optic cable, but the phone was out for more than 24 hours.
