[Lowfer] newbie questions

Hi,
I'm sort of new at this and have a question about receiving hardware. =
Understanding from the different Lowfer sites the stability needed to be =
effective, I need to upgrade my equipment. I currently use a Collins =
R389 and Mackay 3010C which are a bit drifty. I would like to get the =
groups feel for a receiver that would work for me without spending my =
retirement. I am currently using a 8" diameter shielded loop with a fet =
preamp in a fairly noisy area (Houston, TX). I am looking at the Icom =
R75 and Drake R8A receivers to do the chore. Is there any preference =
based on experience or possible another option?
