The ARRL Antenna Book has a graph showing the capacitance of solid disks or
cylinders. Using antenna modeling software, you can calculate the
capacitance
of an antenna with no top hat, and subtract that from the capacitance with a
"skeleton" type of hat made with 6 or 8 spokes and a skirt wire. When
compared to the data in the book, there isn't enough difference to make up
for the additional wind/snow/ice loading problems of a more "perfect" top
hat. One indisputable fact is that a solid top hat on the ground is not as
good as a skeleton hat in the air.
