Lowfers,

The LWCA's publication "The Lowdown" has been a good read for me for
the past several years on current topics of NDB and LowFER activities,
even a touch of bygone-days stuff. The Feb. issue offers an unusual
piece (IMO) on a complete LF receiving system: designs for a shielded rx
loop, a bal. amp, and a remote control-interface module. The article,
surprisingly short, by one Dave Childs, is both lucid as it is practical
in covering construction detail and, as he states, builds upon the work
of others, unifying their works into this system. Having made like
components myself, reading the Childs' piece was like steps in memory
lane, in parts.

One surprise on first sight was the balanced pre-amp. Me: "I've seen
that before!" Sure enough, as suspected, the author credited Lyle with
the design to which he made minor changes, nicely including pin-outs for
the semis. Seems most of the narrative is taken with the loop
construction, it's very detailed. I recommend this for those wishing to
have or improve their rx capabilities for LF as I also recommend The
Lowdown as a regular, sustaining force for those of us exploring the LF
regions.

Somewhat telling may be Childs' email handle, "wireaddict," but is this
"looper" also known on this list? have a beacon? Nice job, Dave.
