My understanding is that most of the tuning, filtering, demodulation, etc.
is done inside the "black box" containing the RX-320 radio -- all the
computer does is to provide the control functions that are normally taken
care of by a radio's front panel. I have an Icom PCR1000 that operates in a
similar fashion. However, the RX-320 may offer means to upgrade the DSP
filtering by loading in new firmware, which may partially qualify it as a
"software defined radio".
In the case of the FlexRadio system, the hardware does only the
downconversion, and all of the fine tuning, filtering and demodulation are
done by the computer's sound card. The simple downconverter designs on my
web page are bare-bones versions of a software defined radio that cover a
limited frequency range.
