Dale,

OK - misunderstood! That signal has drifted down considerably in frequency
since this morning. I caught the top line at 13555.475 at 07:30 EST, and it
was down to 13555.43 when last seen around 6 PM. He's obviously angling for
a fight with RY.
Regarding your loop question, the problem is universal. While we Lowfers are
able to detect signals buried 20 dB or more in the noise, once you pass the
point that the buried signal is above the receiver's noise, you don't gain
much. Exceptions that I can think of right off the top of my bald head:
1. The bigger loop may allow for reception of weak signals deeper into a
fade. You may be able to do useful work on lousy nights with the bigger
antenna.
2. A larger loop may have its area placed farther away from noise sources.
If you make a loop by stringing wires way up through tree branches, your
local grundge pickup MIGHT be lower than with a smaller loop closer to the
ground. This would be particularly true if there were a lot of 60 Hz - based
currents running through that ground.
3. The larger loop might take some pressure off the need for a good preamp.
My rx loop is about the size of your new one, a square, 6 feet on a side.
Thus far, there is nothing that I haven't been able to hear with that loop
(14 turns) that I could hear with the single turn 50x50 foot loop I have
strung up in the trees. I can bypass the preamp when using the big antenna
but there's not much advantage, as my Jay Rusgrove 50 ohm preamp is pretty
bullet-proof.
I'm sure that I'm missing something obvious, and equally sure that Lyle will
chime in with it shortly!
