Is it really that bad, or just not as good as it used to be? Again, I seem
to have gotten a different impression than the rest of the group. Summer
before last when I was experimenting with HiFer I tuned in on the SSB
portion of 20M band a few times with my, then new, R-75 (first receiver I've
owned that could decently copy SSB). I was very impressed with with the type
of communication going on. Guys with only 100w all over the world were a
solid copy. Everyone seemed to be respectful of the other operators. If I
were a Ham I think this would be my favorite band because of its interesting
propagation characteristics and the possibilities of constructing some
effective antennas. On the other hand the surface wave distance capabilities
are poor and guys only 50 miles from here were in the noise.
