Eric, why not try a regen using 12 volt 'space charge' tubes like 12DZ6?
Nothing more fancy than 8AAs or a gel cell needed for fils *and* plate!
With regard to xtal sets, I'll second the coolness factor! :-) However, if
you want to hear anything weaker than the strongest NDB(s) in your area they
are not really the best way to go on LF. Regens will kick butt and a
well-designed one can be a serious DXing machine.
