The loss due to the ground is the result of the huge doughnut shaped 
magnetic field surrounding the loop needing to pass right though the ground 
under the lower portions of the loop. This tends to lower the Q of this big 
one-turn coil. My theory is that the field would either pass right through 
the chicken wire into the ground or conduct within the chicken wire - still 
representing a loss due to the relatively poor conductivity of the chicken 
wire, so it could actually make things worse! This loss is only 20%, worse 
case, when the soil is totally saturated, so it may not be worth the effort 
and cost. I'm sure, however, many loopers would welcome any attempt to check 
this out. I wouldn't even mind if someone tied out a large copper screen 
under a loop ....... then followed this experiment with a large screen of 
ferrite panels - which, for sure, would keep the field out of the ground! :)
