The W0AH/B 160M 15 mw 1802.2 experiment was successful and is now QRT.
Reception reports are still coming in, presently 31 from 16 states, coast to
coast. Many, many more attempted reception. The summary is on the 160M
reflector. Although the beacon generated a lot of interest among 160M
operators, I realized that a 160M beacon at the low end could cause
unintended problems. KH6AT reported that a few years ago a KH6 ham ran a
several watt beacon at 1809 which made DXing virtually impossible for him.
NOW, I understand why a beacon at the low end of 160M is a bad idea even
though the great majority of those who emailed me thought it was a "fun
experiment" to quote just one. Quite a few wanted me to contiue it, which I
now realize is a bad idea. Even though my beacon probably had no unintended
consequences, others might. If just one like KH6AT is negatively affected,
it's certainly not worth it. I realize the LOWfers/MEDfers weren't
paricularly interested in my experiment. 15 mw erp is high power and not on
the MEDfer/LOWfer frequencies. I don't think I got a single report from my
advisory postings here. As of now, I have moved the beacon to approximately
1694.75 KHz.
It is running about 100 mw to a quickly thrown together 10' antenna that I
hope to improve with a better tophat and higher Q loading coil. For the time
being I'm sending "AH" at about 5 WPM, the lowest my keyer will send. I will
switch to QRSS in October. Possibly you will hear it since I have a very
good location on a almost treeless hill at 9000' elevation and thousands of
feet of radials underneith it.
