I have tried the same thing - the impedance of the single turn loop is
verrrrry low..... I would suggest you reduce the loop side of the toroid to
2-3 turns centre tapped..... leave the secondary as is for now.
You don't mention a preamp out at the loop ?  Assuming this is the case, you
probably would need something inside to give a bit of gain.
I am using Lyle's "universal" preamp inside when I don't have a preamp
mounted on the external antenna.
Without knowing the permeability of the toroid - this is cut-n-try, but it
should help.
