I am confused!

What IS the direction of max radiation for Mike's new antenna
as he describes it?

If this is  an Ashlock Loop you are responsible for it's properties
and it's direction of max radiation aren't you?

You have your wires crossed. The plane of the loop is the direction of max
radiation.
