Well, I might have worded it poorly.

The top and bottom horizontal wires run in roughly a north/south line. The
two vertical wires are north/south of each other. Thus I considered the
plane of the antenna to be the geometric plane that the elements live in.

I guess that things must be different on this band. All the UHF loops that I
built for ATV operation always radiated maximum signal at 90 degrees to the
plane of the elements.
