Although it may be possible to receive LowFER signals in QRSS mode for
several hundred miles on surface wave, I expect that most of the "DX"
captures we're seeing are the result of sky-wave propagation. Otherwise the
signal strength should be the same, night or day, aurora or not.
Looking back through my notes, I see that OK was copyable by ear on August
14, 1997, at a distance of 750 miles, at 0845 local time. That sure wasn't
ground wave! Obviously sky-wave propagation at LF can be present during
daylight hours even in summer.
