Vern,
Hmmm...
1. Did you provide a break in the shield on the pickup loop?
A: yes exactlly mid way about 1/2 an inch
2. Are you tuning the center conductor of the mail loop? If so, what is the
shield doing?
A: yes using a big bank of capacitors
3. I don't own any FT-series equipment, but most of the general coverage
receivers need some help in the LF range. A quiet preamp might not be a bad
idea. Remember, you are looking for signals that are buried in the audible
noise. Of course, this doesn't explain the difference you are seeing with
the smaller loop.
A: My research indicates that the TS450 sat is the same reciever as
the TS850, which is know to be a good performer on LF.
4. Yes, the skywave signals may be lower than the signals you get from the
MN guys. On the other hand, they may peak considerably in the middle of the
night.
A: I'm assuming that the signal beyond Lyle are ground wave, they
could be skywave propagated by a low D layer. I notice a signal enhancement
to the east around local sunset, get strong signal from NDBs in Northern
Ontario abt 341 khz. Been watching around this time but haven't seen a
thing. So I will try to build a preamp and see how that does. Will keep
looking this weekend
Thanks
Will also be looking for WE in the afternoon
