since the Litz wire has EACH strand withing the twists
insulated, less of the area of a given cross section is
conductor, so it takes more wire to achieve the same
cross sectional conduction area as non insulated wire.
There is also a frequency dependent component due
to the incividual strands of copper NOT being in
contact electrically with each nother. More wire means
more length of wire, hence higher DC resistance. I
did a lot of engineering work with Litz nearly 40 years
ago and it has some really wild properties, as well as
a few "assumed" properties that will drive you nuts (am
I a good case in point?) if you believe all the published
data on Litz. The lab chief, an RPE, finally put up a sign
about Litz that read: When designing with Litz, NEVER
ASSUME anything published to be correct - anyone in
this lab who "assumes" such will be doing the following:
ASS/U/ME
which means said individual will make and an ass out
of self and lab chief, and will therefore be subject to the
greatest possible punitive consequences, which could
involve the use of a device on said individual designed
for conversion of male beef cattle into something a bit
less male!"
Thought I had lost the pic of that sign, but found it after
only 2 hours of digging!

The other half is to teach something new each day to
