Simple - a cross section of a solid wire with a given diameter is pure, 100%
copper. A cross section of Litz wire is made up of copper strands and
insulation on each strand. Therefore, there is less copper in the same
area. A coil wound with Litz will have a higher dc resistance than one
wound with solid copper wire of same outer dimension, but the ac apparent
resistance will be lower due to skin effect of the current. At high
frequencies current will flow in the outer surface of the wire only. Depth
of current penetration gets worse as frequency goes up. Litz wire is great
due to very high surface area of wire of a comparable size.
