It also depends whether you are trying to work in real time or not. A lot of
the Lowfer work is done with unattended screen captures, and it's easy to
set the timer so that they overlap.

That's very appropriate for the frequency involved, where frequency
stability is shaky because of propagation. Assuming the more stable
conditions at LF, though, you theoretically pick up another 3 dB of signal
to noise ratio every time you halve the data rate. Having worked with really
painful stuff like QRSS120, I can testify that it does make a difference,
assuming that a path exists for the duration of the message!
